Have you ever had this happen?

Your best finance person has become a search engine.

Have you ever asked finance why an invoice is still unpaid, only to discover three people are searching for the same receipt?

Fictional business scenarios. Companies, scenes and resolutions are invented to illustrate Smokejumper's approach; they are not customer results.

The situation

The controller is supposed to be thinking about cash. Instead, she is opening a supplier PDF, finding the purchase order, checking a receipt and asking whether a price difference was approved. She does it again for the next invoice. An urgent bank-detail change arrives while the queue grows. The CEO sees an overdue payment. The controller sees a trail of missing context and exceptions that only a handful of people understand.

The opportunity is to give skilled finance people a trustworthy exception process. Making document reading faster does little if nobody owns the discrepancy or verifies the next action.

How we would approach it

Connect the problem to the company plan.

01. Connect the work to the company plan: payment accuracy, supplier confidence and time for cash decisions. Map the invoice, purchase order and receipt, with finance employees explaining real exceptions.

02. Define which records are authoritative, what constitutes a match and who resolves each exception. Keep payment authority with the existing authorized people. Bank-detail changes still require the company's independent verification process.

03. Use the Innovation Center to test assistance that gathers evidence, proposes matches and routes discrepancies to an owner. Include duplicates, missing receipts, unfamiliar suppliers and conflicting details. Introduce the capability in phases, with education and a traceable decision trail.

The fictional resolution

A better decision, with an owner.

In the fictional company, the controller opens a queue organized around decisions. Each exception has its source records and an owner. Routine evidence gathering no longer dictates her whole morning. The team can explain what is waiting and why, without treating an AI suggestion as authority to pay.

What we would measure

Track invoice-to-decision time, unresolved exceptions by age, staff search time and incorrect matches caught during review. Reconcile any improvement against payment errors and supplier disputes.
